Human beings are intelligent life and advanced life. Although humans are mammals, we are different from other mammals in that we have an intelligent brain. The brain is the most complex and mysterious of all human organs. The human brain is intelligent, and one of the manifestations of this wisdom is not the complex and powerful memory ability.
Memory is a special physiological phenomenon in human body. Accurately speaking, memory is a special ability in the nervous system to store and record past experiences. It represents a person’s accumulated impression of past activities, feelings and experiences. Everyone’s brain has its own memory, these memories contain a person’s life.
There are three kinds of memory in the brain: long-term memory, short-term memory and instantaneous memory. At present, scientists have no definite answer on how to form these three kinds of memories. Some people may say that as long as we constantly repeat, the things that we often use will form long-term memory, the memory that we don’t often use is short-term memory, and the instantaneous memory is the instantaneous experience.
Is it really that simple? Of course not. We don’t deny that if things are applied every day, they will form long-term memory. For example, the work we are engaged in will form long-term memory because we use them every day. But some long-term memories are not often used by us. Sometimes when we were young, we just experienced something suddenly, and then formed a long-term memory. Until the end of our life, we still won’t forget it.
Especially in childhood, a lot of memory, often can become a long-term memory, will not be lost. I believe many friends can remember a lot of things they experienced when they were about 5 years old. Take Xiaobian for example. Sometimes in the dead of night, as long as you fall into childhood memories, you will think of some memories when you were 4 years old. That kind of memory is very deep.
But when I remember three years ago, I can’t remember it at all. Sometimes I ask my parents to tell me some interesting things before I was 3 years old. My parents remember a lot about things before I was 3 years old. Although I have my parents’ story, I still don’t remember anything before I was 3 years old. However, when my parents told me something after 4 years old, I could recall a lot.
What’s going on? There is only one year difference between 3 and 4 years old. Why is there no memory before 3 years old? How can this be weird? In order to solve this mystery, I read a lot of information about brain memory, and also searched the Internet. Through the search, I found that most people have no memory of before 3 years old. Even some gifted children who are called prodigies, even if they are only five years old, if you ask them, do they remember things before they were three years old? They will also answer: No.
Why do most people lose their memories before the age of three? Are these memories completely gone, or are they buried in our minds? Scientists have no definite answer to this question, but only put forward two possible views.
First, scientists believe that before the age of three, we develop into juveniles from the embryonic stage, and initially have body shape and functions of various parts. However, the shape of the body is still developing and improving, including the improvement of the brain nerve and the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory. Before the age of three, our body is developing for most of the time For growth and modification, constantly repair their own growth direction and degradation of some unnecessary organs and tissues.
During this period, the hippocampus in the brain is not fully developed and does not have the ability to store it and nerve points. Therefore, before the age of 3, our brain is busy developing nerves and tissues, and the hippocampus is gradually growing. After the age of 3, our hippocampus has initially possessed this function. So before the age of 3, our brain has no concept of memory, so we can’t store related memories.
This view actually means that the memory level of human brain before the age of 3 is equivalent to the cache function in the memory of computer or mobile phone. The data can not be stabilized, but is in a cache stage and will disappear soon. That is to say, the memory before the age of 3 is not buried deep in the brain, but completely disappeared.
Second, scientists believe that memories before the age of three are only infant memories, while memories after the age of three belong to adult memories. And infant memory and adult memory are two completely different models. Adults and children have their own ways and choices. And children’s memory in the process of their growing up slowly to adult memory or into adult memory. But it doesn’t mean that human beings don’t have memory before the age of three. It’s just that we can’t read children’s three-year-old memory when we read the memory code.
The above point of view, we use the computer data storage format to understand is much simpler, I believe many friends know that there are many kinds of data storage formats, and different formats of data need to use the corresponding decoding method to interpret. If the decoding method is wrong, we cannot understand the content of the data.
Memory before the age of three and memory after the age of three are equivalent to two completely different memory formats. It is difficult for us to solve children’s memory with adult memory format, so we can’t see the memory before the age of three. If we want to read the memory before the age of three, we need special tools. Unfortunately, such tools do not exist in the brain.
If the second view is correct, that the memory before the age of 3 is stored in the brain in a unique format, then if we want to solve it, we may only rely on the power of technology. As long as human beings can develop relevant tools in the future, they may be able to read the memories before the age of 3, which I believe everyone wants to see very much.
Of course, it is still unknown which of the above two views is correct. The human brain is too complex and mysterious. Our understanding of the brain is still in its infancy, just a little superficial. Especially the things like consciousness and memory, which are real existence but can’t be touched and can’t be seen, are totally unknown.
It can be seen that human science and technology are still relatively backward, and there are too many secrets in the world for us to uncover, especially the mysteries of human body. It is possible that in the future, we will become a powerful interstellar civilization, and still can not really uncover the mysteries of human body, especially the mysteries of brain.
