For a long time, scientists all over the world have never stopped their research and Exploration on Mars. In order to find the second largest planet suitable for human habitation, scientists have focused on “Mars”. Even if this planet has become a “sand ball” and lost its magnetic field, they have never given up their Research on Mars. In order to study a kind of probe that can stay in Mars for a long time and observe the climate and geological changes on Mars, “insight” came into being. It is an unmanned landing probe on Mars and a Mars geophysical probe launched by NASA to Mars.
Insight is expensive. What is its main mission to Mars?
In the research of many scientists day and night, the “insight” was finally designed, which can be said to be an important scientific project of international cooperation. It costs more than 900 million US dollars, and is also an upgraded version of the Phoenix probe, which has made great achievements before. After landing on Mars, the probe will install a pyroseismometer on the surface of Mars, in addition to that It will also use its drill to drill one of the deepest holes on Mars to detect the internal state of Mars.
Many people can’t help asking, “what’s this Rover doing on Mars?” In fact, this insight probe is not only to observe the size of Mars’ core, the thickness of its crust and the changes of its climate, but also to study the formation of rocky planets in the solar system more than 4 billion years ago. Whether human beings can find the second most livable planet has always been a problem for scientists to study. Therefore, the advent of insight also helps scientists to analyze this problem. Only by deeply studying the changes of planets in the solar system can we find the second most livable planet as soon as possible.
Insight has been drilling holes in Mars for two years. Have you made any major discoveries?
After insight completed its first year exploration mission, it overturned scientists’ understanding of Mars. It turns out that the frequency of earthquakes and sandstorms on Mars is even more active than scientists thought. Mars does not have the so-called plate tectonics like the earth at all, and the most active volcanic areas cause seismic waves. According to the data fed back by insight, scientists have found that although However, the planet has no magnetic field, but there are some magnetic remnants left. At the beginning of the design of insight, scientists installed a magnetic needle in the probe, so after the first year of exploration, insight can directly detect magnetic signals on the surface of Mars, and these magnetic signals exist in the range of more than 60 meters to several thousand meters from the surface of Mars.
In the second year, insight continuously brought “Mars Weather Forecast” to scientists. Through long-term data monitoring and comparison, scientists finally found that the highest temperature on Mars was beyond our expectation, and it was not as close to the earth’s temperature as we thought. The highest temperature on Mars was minus 17 degrees Celsius, and the lowest temperature was – At minus 95 degrees centigrade, scientists also put a special label “cold ball” on it. It seems that such a temperature is not suitable for human habitation, and its atmospheric pressure is far lower than the earth’s sea level pressure. In addition, insight also monitored the wind speed and direction on Mars. According to the data monitored by relevant sensors, the frequency of sandstorms and earthquakes on Mars is very high.
Now, insight has completed the mission that Phoenix did not complete. In more than two years of exploration, the monitoring data brought to scientists have helped scientists further understand a series of changes on Mars. It is believed that in the near future, with the continuous upgrading and improvement of science and technology, insight will also help scientists to realize the monitoring of various planetary fields in the solar system From the initial understanding of the Martian atmosphere and geological features to the in-depth study of the interior of the Martian surface, perhaps one day in the future, insight will help mankind find a new beautiful and happy home!
