Can humans breathe in liquid? Scientist: everyone used to have this ability

The way of human breathing is through the exchange of oxygen with alveoli and capillaries, which can integrate oxygen and emit carbon dioxide. But many people may forget that when we were still in the fetus, we were surrounded by fluid, covered in amniotic fluid, and only connected by an umbilical cord. Is it breathing in liquid?

In fact, in the fetal period, the lungs are solid and can not breathe, so the fetus will not drown in amniotic fluid. The fetus’s breathing is realized by the blood getting oxygen from the placenta, so it is not by the lungs but by the umbilical cord.

In this way, humans used to breathe in “liquid”. So can adults breathe in liquid? This seemingly idiotic question has been studied by scientists!

A normal adult wants to breathe, must have two conditions: the first is oxygen can enter the lungs, the second is carbon dioxide can be discharged from the lungs, both must meet. It’s not impossible for humans to breathe in liquid.

Scientists have done an experiment with mice: immerse mice in a high concentration of sodium chloride solution containing oxygen, and the result is that mice die. Because even if there is a lot of dissolved oxygen, the lungs of mice can not emit a lot of carbon dioxide, and the physiological function of the lungs is immediately damaged.

A year later, the scientists replaced the high concentration of oxygen-containing sodium chloride aqueous solution with a liquid compound formed only by carbon and fluorine, which can dissolve a large amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in water.

Therefore, the carbon dioxide emitted by the mice is dissolved in this liquid, because oxygen can be dissolved in the solution, so the mice can absorb oxygen in the liquid, and the mice can breathe in the liquid! With the further development of science, more compounds that can make mice breathe in liquid have been synthesized perfluorodiodane.

It is an organic viscous liquid with higher density than water. It is also used in medical treatment to help patients with acute dyspnea, so as to assist the respiratory function of the lung and improve the gas exchange capacity between oxygen and the lung.

But if people want to breathe in this kind of liquid, there are many troubles. Although it is non-toxic and harmless, it can not meet the requirement of human body to absorb oxygen and emit carbon dioxide by entering the liquid completely. Even with the assistance of science and technology, they can only breathe in the liquid for about 5 minutes.

Although the current technology can not achieve, but I believe that chemists in the near future can synthesize more perfect compounds, in medicine can also help people with dyspnea, benefit mankind!
