After three years of testing, it will be officially put into use in September this year.
With an aperture of 500 meters, China’s sky eye is the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope (fast), which can effectively explore various radio signals in the universe. There are many wireless radio signals in the universe. There are two main sources of these signals. One is from celestial bodies, such as pulsars and neutron stars, and the other may be from alien civilizations.
Recently, Chinese scientists said that China’s sky eye will start the plan to search for exoplanets, and will search for exoplanets within the range of about 100 light-years from the earth. Some people may say, isn’t China’s sky eye a radio telescope? Can planets also send out radio electromagnetic signals? Many people may think that only special celestial bodies such as pulsars and neutron stars can emit wireless pulse signals.
In fact, planets can also send out wireless pulse signals, but such planets must have the same strong magnetic field as the earth. It can be seen that China’s celestial eye is not looking for ordinary planets within 100 light-years, but for planets with magnetic fields like the earth.
Planets are ubiquitous in the universe, but not all planets have magnetic fields. Among the eight major planets in the solar system, six have planetary scale magnetic fields. They are Mercury, earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. At the same time, they are all strong radio sources. Venus and Mars are planets without magnetic fields.
Then why do Chinese scientists search for planets with magnetic fields? In fact, the reason is not complicated. The main purpose is to find a super earth more similar to the earth. We all know that the earth can give birth to life, life can continue to develop to the present, with the earth has a strong magnetic field has a great relationship. If the earth does not have a magnetic field, even if life can be born in the early days, it will continue to develop to the present, let alone human beings.
The earth’s magnetic field can protect life from cosmic rays and the atmosphere from the solar wind. Scientists speculate that Mars had a strong magnetic field long ago, with a thick atmosphere, liquid water and possibly life. However, for some unknown reason, the magnetic field disappeared, most of the atmosphere was blown away by the solar wind, and the liquid water on the surface was also lost. Finally, Mars became barren.
If human beings want to carry out interstellar migration in the future and choose exoplanets suitable for human survival, they must meet three conditions: suitable humidity, thick atmosphere and strong magnetic field. These three conditions are indispensable. Without any of them, they are not suitable for human survival. According to this condition, we can see that Mars is not suitable for human existence because it has no magnetic field.
If scientists can’t activate the magnetic field inside Mars in the process of transforming Mars in the future, it will be difficult for human beings to migrate to Mars in large numbers. If there is no magnetic field, human beings will be directly exposed to the harsh cosmic environment and can’t survive at all.
In addition to searching for a planet suitable for human beings, China’s celestial eye is also searching for extraterrestrial life and extraterrestrial civilization. We should know that planets with very similar ecological environment to the earth are naturally more likely to give birth to life and alien civilization. In particular, the requirements of intelligent life for the environment are very harsh.
If a planet has no magnetic field and thick atmosphere, some life may be born. For example, life also exists in some extreme environments on earth. But if we want to give birth to intelligent life, without a suitable humidity, thick atmosphere and strong magnetic field protection, it is basically impossible. So a purgatory planet like Venus may give birth to some extreme life, but it is impossible to give birth to intelligent life.
In addition to exploring the earth like planets that have not yet been discovered, China Tianyan will also focus on exploring the earth like planets that have been discovered by other telescopes. For example, the exoplanets found by Kepler telescope and the exoplanets discovered by the exoplanet probe Tess.
However, the exoplanets found by the Kepler telescope are relatively far away from the earth, 500 light-years away, and are not within the exploration scope of China’s celestial eye. On the contrary, it is the exoplanet probe “Tess”, which mainly looks for exoplanets closer to the earth, and the exoplanets it discovers will become an important exploration target for China’s sky eye.
“Tess” can find exoplanets close to the earth through optical or infrared imaging, but it can’t determine whether these planets will have magnetic field. However, China’s heavenly eye can explore the planets discovered by “Tess”. If it can be observed by China’s heavenly eye, it means that this planet has magnetic field, and such a planet will undoubtedly be recognized by scientists More attention, it may be the new earth that human beings are looking for, and even some mysterious radio signals may be detected from these planets.
China’s sky eye will officially launch a new exploration plan in September. Its power is beyond our imagination. In the future, it will bring more discoveries beyond our expectations.
