In Cologne, Germany, 12 volunteers will lie down for 60 days in a research experiment simulating the microgravity environment in space to study the bone and muscle degradation of astronauts. They will not only create a history of aerospace research, but also receive a reward of 16500 euros.
A 110 square meter room is used to study the effects of oxygen reduction and environmental stress reduction; a room is used to simulate psychological stress and psychological rehabilitation, because living in a small space with limited social activities will lead to psychological stress; and a laboratory is used to study the radiation effects of space. The laboratory of the Institute looks like a huge white Lego building on the outside, and the internal environment is similar to the space station. It is a 3500 square meter space without windows.
Scientists say: living in space for more than thousands of people will have an impact on health, and Mars travel can take at least six months. If the round trip is included, it will take at least one year. Such a long time is bound to bring unknown effects on the physical and mental health of astronauts. We must know these effects in advance, and then conduct research on these effects to find more advanced methods to offset these effects.
The experiment, called artificial gravity bed rest study, was conducted in two batches. The first batch of participants started on March 25, 2019, and the second batch started in early September and ended in December. Strictly speaking, the experiment lasted a total of 89 days, with 15 days of familiarization, 60 days of bed rest, two weeks of rest and rehabilitation, and four follow-up visits in 2020 and 2021.
During the experiment, volunteers had to keep at least one shoulder in contact with the mattress at all times. At the same time, in order to simulate the environment of the international space station, the carbon dioxide in the room increased slightly. Every day, physiotherapists stretch and massage them, and then doctors take their blood pressure and urine samples, perform blood analysis and cognitive, hearing and vision tests, as well as MRI to measure their muscle growth and weakness, and X-ray to check their bone mineral density. Training courses and cardiovascular function measurements should alternate with strict calorie based diet adjustments to prevent volunteers from gaining or losing weight during the study.
In space, the most common activities become complicated. Volunteers were not allowed to eat or defecate by leaning or sitting. When they want to take a bath, they can lie in a specially installed room. Every day they also experience a centrifugal experience, circling around a circular room for 30 minutes, like riding a merry go round.
Another challenge for volunteers is to overcome boredom. When they are in bed, they can only watch books or TV movies, and occasionally chat with family and friends. So researchers sometimes invite astronauts to visit them and tell them about their space experiences.
So what happens to these researchers when the 60 day experiment is over? The results showed that most of the participants were difficult to return to normal walking. After lying at a 6-degree angle for 60 days, they lost their balance and coordination ability. They were dizzy and had to take time to adapt to normal life.
Thus, it can be seen that the space technology of mankind now is a great challenge to complete the Mars journey. This challenge does not mean that the spacecraft can not successfully land on Mars.
