As early as 1970, scientists believed that there was an ocean deep on the surface of Ganymede. In 2002, Galileo spacecraft confirmed the possibility of the existence of Ganymede ocean. In addition, the Hubble Observatory provides the most convincing evidence to support the theory of the ocean underground.
The ocean of Ganymede lies between two layers of ice, with a depth of up to 100 kilometers. In the search for life on exoplanets or other celestial bodies, scientists obey these two rules: ① objects must be located in a habitable area; ② liquid water must exist.
However, Ganymede is not in a habitable area, and there is no liquid water on its surface, so there may be no life on its surface. Nevertheless, life may be hidden in the ocean below the surface, which forces Ganymede to contract and elongate due to the tidal force of Jupiter, thus heating it up.
The core temperature of Ganymede is also high enough. The core temperature is about 1500-1700k, so among these factors, the heat from Ganymede can keep the water liquid. We know that life needs liquid water, so the prospect of looking for life on Ganymede is very high.
Perhaps in the waters of Ganymede, there may be the smallest living objects, even single celled organisms.
In addition, humans also found that there is a thin atmosphere on Ganymede. Hubble also found a thin layer of atmosphere on the surface of Ganymede, which is basically oxygen.
Scientists believe that because of the ice on Ganymede’s surface, it separates into hydrogen and oxygen under sunlight. Among them, hydrogen atom is lighter, and the gravitation of Ganymede is not enough to bind it, so gaseous hydrogen escapes, leaving only part of gaseous oxygen. In addition, Ganymede also has a high ion layer, which makes it very similar to the earth in many characteristics.
Will there be life on Ganymede?
In fact, there is no life on the surface of Ganymede for three reasons
First, there is no liquid water on the surface of Ganymede; second, the surface oxygen is very thin, and the surface pressure is less than one ten thousandth of the earth’s atmospheric pressure; third, the surface of Ganymede is too cold, and the average temperature is about minus 160 ℃, so no living things can survive in such an environment.
This also led many scientists to speculate that although we have not yet found signs of life on the surface of Ganymede, the interior of Ganymede may be far more complex than we thought. As mentioned earlier, like Europa, there may be life in the interior ocean of Ganymede. In some cases, Ganymede is more reliable than Europa.
In addition to Ganymede, Jupiter’s moons, such as Europa and Callisto, also have many unique and magical features.
It is planned that in 2020, humans will launch the Jupiter ice moon probe into the Jupiter system. Its main task is to explore the satellite’s atmosphere, magnetosphere and the ocean below the surface of Ganymede.
If in the future, with the development of space science and technology, human beings have the ability to explore the liquid ocean inside Ganymede and discover the existence of life, it may change some of human cognition of exploring extraterrestrial life. Although the surface environment of many planets is bad and life cannot survive, the internal environment of their planets may be very comfortable and suitable for the survival of life, thus giving birth to life.
