Why can moon rocks be brought back to earth for research, but Mars rocks can’t?

Since the probe can land on Mars, there is also a great success rate in collecting samples and returning them to the earth. Therefore, it is not correct to guess that the current human science and technology can not complete the collection and returning of Martian rocks. If so, why don’t scientists? In fact, the main reason is not dare, afraid to bring unknown risks to the earth and human beings.


As we all know, the environment of the moon and Mars is totally different. The moon has no atmosphere, and the environment above is basically the same as that of space. In this kind of environment that is completely exposed to space, the moon can not have the birth of life. The birth of any life needs an ecosystem, which doesn’t need to be like the earth. If there is no atmosphere, the planet will not have wind and other climate changes.

Although the atmosphere of Mars is thin, the surface of Mars still forms its own ecosystem with the protection and function of this thin atmosphere. As long as there is organic matter, there may be the birth of life. If Mars is a planet of life, there is a high probability that there will be life in the rocks and soil on Mars. It is because of these concerns that scientists dare not bring Martian meteorites and soil back to earth for research. Of course, the study of Martian rocks and soils is an inevitable way for scientists to understand Mars, and this process must go in the future. Scientists dare not bring Mars samples back to earth until they are really sure whether there is life on Mars or whether it is not a threat to life on earth.

Even if we want to study Martian rocks and soil in the future, it will be in the space laboratory, not brought back to earth. Of course, the best way is to set up a base on Mars, in which we can do all kinds of research on the rocks of Mars, and then we can determine whether there is life on Mars.


Of course, there are both advantages and disadvantages for human beings whether Mars has life or not. If Mars has life, it can be proved that Mars is still alive now, and there is still a time for it to come back to life in the future. And the success rate of human transformation of Mars will be much higher. But if there is no life on Mars, it means that Mars has completely become a dead star, so the transformation will be much more difficult.

At the same time, if there is life on Mars, it will be difficult for human beings to immigrate to Mars in the future. First of all, we need to determine whether these lives pose a threat to human beings. If so, we need to develop relevant vaccines. Some people may say that if there are microorganisms on Mars, we can eliminate them, and then human beings will be safe?

But in fact, it is very difficult for microorganisms to be extinct. In the billions of years of life history of the earth, all kinds of complex organisms have been extinct one after another, but only microorganisms can not be extinct. On the contrary, the more they live, the better. If the earth encounters mass extinction again in the future, it will be microbes, not other complex creatures, who can survive and continue.
